Safety First

As our sport involves the use of real firearms and live ammunition, we put safety first and foremost. Our matches are conducted under the strict supervision of internationally accredited Match Directors and Range Officers. All firearms are loaded, fired, unloaded,  cleared and certified safe, under the strict supervision of Range Officers, in doing our best to keeping our sport safe and enjoyable for all.

About Our Sport

Single action shooting is based on the use of original and reproduction firearms of the period of the American "old west". We also do our best to dress in clothes, depicting this famous period of history. We participate under the international rules of the " Single Action Shooting Society" , which now boasts in excess of some sixty thousand members worldwide. Here in Australia SASS is promoted and proudly supported by SSAA Single Action Shooting Australia. SASS has a motto and that motto is the "Spirit of the Game", in Aussie terms this simply means good sportsmanship. We are a family sport and regardless of age or gender we do our best to make our game enjoyable for all those participating. We have many family groups competing with juniors from 12 through to some folks well into their 70's still having fun. With many clubs Australia wide having a good following in single action shooting, our national championships are held annually at the Millmerran complex owned by the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia. This event has continued to grow and now has many international competitors attending on a regular basis.

Costuming

A big part of SASS is dressing in costumes depicting a character or profession of the period. We have cowboys and gals, lawmen and outlaws, lawyers, store owners, blacksmiths, barmen, saloon girls, men and women of the cloth, Indians and soldiers, you name it and let your imagination set you a character and start assembling your costume around your choice. This game is about fun and we're all here to enjoy. From "Billy the kid" to "Annie Oakley" Maybe a pioneer that took the famous wagon trails west, the possibilities are endless.

Categories

Categories are based on age and gender along with sub categories that use smokeless and black powder loads or slight differences in period firearms. For example traditional uses pistols with only blade front sights, whilst modern uses pistols with adjustable sights. Frontier cartridge is all black powder loads and classic cowboy has more specific costuming requirements as well as firearms of 1873 design and earlier. pistols can be used in a two handed "traditional " grip or shot duellist "one handed grip". Frontiersman uses cap and ball pistols, and the list goes on. We are sure there's a category that would suit should you be interested.

Alias

A big part of the fun of our game is choosing an alias. Your alias is registered and then remains exclusively yours. It can be based on a real character of the period, even an ancestor, a character from a western movie or something you just thought up yourself. Most people once having chosen an alias then do their best to develop their costume around their chosen character.

Firearms

In our sport, we use two single action revolvers, lever action rifles chambered in pistol calibres and shotguns all of which are based on the firearms used in the old west.  We also have side matches involving the engagement of long range targets. In these we use period lever action rifles in classic calibres such as 30 WCF, 45-70 govt,38-55 etc. Other matches include single shot buffalo rifle, still in classic calibres with either smokeless or black powder loads. For more info on this subject check out our firearms page.
